The Genome Analyzer is a next-generation gene sequencing system that can generate more than one billion finished bases of high quality data in a single run. It uses sequencing by synthesis (SBS) technology to generate about 2 million clusters per channel in a flow cell consist of eight channels. For each cluster, the sequence length can be 18, 25 and 36 bps. Therefore, it can generate about 36-72 Megabases of sequences per channel. Its technology has been used for re-sequencing of the human genome or selected genomic regions, for Bacterial DNA sequencing and re-sequencing, for highly sensitive digital gene expression profiling (to one copy per cell sensitivity) and for small RNA expression profiling and discovery.
